Delphine handed me the cream service apron at the foot of the back stairs.
"Staff don't use the front, sweetheart."
My father stood ten feet away with his coffee, staring out at the wet lawn and refusing to meet my eyes.
Eighteen months ago, someone forged my signature on a mortgage assignment against Wren Hall, my late mother's estate. That morning I had finally secured the notarized trust amendment naming me emergency trustee, alongside bank records proving the loan proceeds went straight into Delphine's account. I tied the apron on anyway and carried champagne flutes through the tent while she rehearsed her toast.
At 12:20, right as she raised her glass to announce my stepbrother as the new head of the foundation, a man's voice cut through the applause, asking for Ms. Mara Sloane.
Delphine waved him off without looking. "She's with catering."
"No, ma'am," the estate lawyer said, laying a thick leather folder across the linen. "She's the emergency trustee."
Her smile vanished. The tent went dead silent. Delphine lunged forward to seize the documents, but the lawyer blocked her hand and held out a pen to me. Across the room, my father's face went completely pale as everyone waited to see what I would do.
