The Gardener They Called Confused Saw the Murder

The trowel was already in the water when the shouting started.
An old man knelt in the wet vine rows, both hands clamped around a small steel trowel.
Mud soaked through his canvas coat.
He washed the blade in the irrigation channel like it was a dish.
Behind him, the harvest blessing went on under the fog.
Crystal glasses. Cream tablecloths. Old money in pressed linen.
The old man had nothing but a flattened cap and a cottage at the top of the block.
Not poor.
Forgotten.
Then the manager saw him.
Neal Brask came down the row in his crested vineyard shirt, boots barely touching the mud.
"Enough," he said. "Get up, Gus."
The old man didn't move.
"I'm cleaning my daughter's hand," he said.
Nobody laughed.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody understood.
"He's confused," Neal said. "He doesn't know what he's holding."
A farmworker took the old man's collar.
Another reached for the trowel.
The grip did not open.
Then the light caught the blade.
Dark. Caked. Wet.
Not water.
Blood.
Elena Ruiz stepped off the crush pad, white lab coat bright against the dark soil.
She tested wine all day.
That was not wine.
"Let me see it," she said.
"Leave it," Neal said. Too fast. "He's a sick old man."
The old man's eyes found hers.
Clear for one second.
"My Maren," he said. "My girl."
The lab tech's breath stopped.
Maren Brask. The lady of the vineyard.
The one they just buried.
The one the report said fell off a tractor at first light.
The old man looked down at the trowel in his fists.
"The water was on," he said. "It was on at midnight."
Neal's hand shot out for the trowel.
The farmworker dragged the old man toward the gate.
He didn't fight.
He wrenched the furrow valve.
The channel burst open.
Muddy water swallowed the row and rose past his knees.
Something pale turned over in it.
Two work gloves.
Canvas and leather. Torn across the right palm.
The old man looked up at the crew.
"Then why was the water running in your rows at midnight?"
