At Fort Harlow’s Gate Nine, the dust storm turns Kyle Rennick’s voice into a blade. He slams Eli Cordero against the hood of a rusted white van, canteen in his fist. “You stole from a dead soldier.”
Eli keeps his hands flat on the hot metal. “I came to give it back.”
Kyle laughs, threatens arrest, then jerks the canteen open. The scratched inner lid catches the light: CPL. DUSTIN RENNICK.
His brother’s name.
Kyle’s rage stalls. His hand shakes around the steel. Behind him, Sergeant Major Angela Voss runs from the guard shack, radio raised, because she recognizes Eli-the medic who was there the day Dustin died.
Eli is still pinned against the van. The canteen is still in Kyle’s grip. One wrong move and the only proof of what really happened at Gate Nine disappears into an evidence bag-or worse.
Kyle stares at the name he grew up worshipping, and for the first time, he doesn’t know whether to bury Eli or listen.
