Claire Dunmore had two minutes left to smile when the busboy set his tray down at the head table and pushed back his sleeve.
Eighteen years she had built on that room - the gala, the board, the portrait in the lobby. Then she saw the boy's jaw, and the smile stopped.
He held out a tarnished silver bracelet, small enough for an infant's wrist. ST. BRIGID'S, the stamp read. ACKERLY - TWIN B.
Her son Grady shoved back his chair between them. "Mom. What is this?" She couldn't answer. She could only read the name under her maiden name - a name she had heard once, in a hospital room, on the worst night of her life.
"I was told you died," she said.
Ellis Vance didn't flinch. "And I was told I wasn't wanted."
He turned his head an inch. Behind his right ear sat a crescent mark - the exact shape she had kissed a thousand times on Grady.
Claire's hand closed over the bracelet and gripped the table linen. Across the ballroom, past the champagne and the strings, her mother Ruth stood watching her over a flute of champagne. Ruth had not come closer. Ruth did not look surprised. And when Claire's eyes found hers, Ruth did not look away.
