Vivian Calder’s palm cracked across my cheek before I finished hanging a guest’s coat.
"Thief," she said, loud enough that the string quartet stopped.
I didn't strike back. I had taken this coat-check shift for one reason: to see the groom, Grant Calder, and confirm he wore the silver half-locket I gave my newborn son twenty-six years ago, before I was told he died.
Her slap snapped my thin chain. The silver half skittered across the marble floor, stopping beside a champagne tower.
Instead of calling security, Grant stepped past Vivian and dropped to one knee. He picked up my tarnished piece, reached beneath his tuxedo shirt, and pulled out his own matching half.
With shaking fingers, he pressed the edges together.
They locked into a complete oval. The worn engraving lined up: N.V. & son, 1999.
"Where did you get this?" Grant breathed, staring at me.
"I gave it to your father the night you were born," I said.
Vivian shoved between us, clutching his arm. "Grant, don't listen to her! Security, remove her now!"
Grant didn't move. He clamped both halves in his fist, looking at me as his mother panicked.
