Corinne slammed my wrist onto the wreath bench so hard Glen's pill organizer jumped. "She's stealing his meds-I caught her."
I was flat on the wet concrete, one hand curled around the seven-day box, the other pinned flat against the bench. For three days I'd logged the missing sedatives in my apron. Corinne knew the count before anyone else reported it.
Freezing rain ticked on the barn roof. In the doorway, my five-year-old stood in his red snowsuit, holding the blue toy walkie-talkie.
"You're done here, Josie," Corinne said.
Then the toy coughed static. A red light blinked. "...let her fall." Her own voice, coming out of my son's toy.
She froze. Behind me, Seth's boots stopped in the doorway, and he didn't ask if I was hurt. "Where's her phone?"
Corinne saw the red light before he did. She turned toward Micah.
I stayed down with the organizer under my chest, because Glen had hours before his next dose and a notary was coming at nine to watch me sign his land away. Everything I had left was in a five-year-old's hands.
