My husband slammed the pantry door on my fingers and leaned in until his breath fogged the frame. “No one’s going to hear you over this storm.”
Pastor Kyle Trask controls the church accounts, his disabled brother’s guardianship and every story told about me in Barlow’s Reach. I’m nine months pregnant, I have no car, no signal and no income, and the man he’s starving is on the other side of that wall.
The green ledger was still open in his hand when he clicked his lighter. Missing deliveries. “V. Cutler” payments. My forged signature on a loan I never signed. While he lowered the flame to the first page, I kicked the case of canned peaches into the shelf leg, and the carbon copy slid into the dark underneath, out of his reach.
Then Eli’s feeding-tube alarm beeped through the north wall, and I got my left hand around the old bell rope in the pantry closet. One pull. The bell overhead began to swing, and Kyle’s face changed - he turned toward the stair with the burning book still in his fist, leaving the door unlatched for exactly half a second.
Kyle already called the social worker. She is due at 8:45 to declare me unfit, and if he finds the carbon copy under that shelf before I get it to the selectboard, I lose my baby and Eli loses his life.
