“I was cold,” the girl whispered, pressing her fist against her chest to hide the silver skate charm she had pulled from her sock.
She was nine, half-frozen, and had slipped into the First Snow Gala through a service door. Across the arena floor, Conrad Vale stood ninety seconds from naming his polished son-in-law Julian as his official successor.
Tessa Moreau pulled the trembling child from behind the coat racks. Conrad crossed the rink floor, and when he saw the worn silver charm - engraved A.V. - First Snow - his stern breath caught. He knelt and took it gently from her fingers. “Where did you get this?”
The girl swallowed hard. “Ruth told me to find my grandfather here.”
His thumb pressed the hidden blade latch he had soldered thirty years ago. It clicked open. Inside was a faded photograph of his late daughter Astrid, cradling an infant.
“Astrid,” Conrad said, his voice breaking across the silent rink.
On the stage, Julian stopped mid-smile and hurried down the steps toward them.
