Chapter 8

Hector stopped in the middle of the room, under the warm event lights, with the Minneapolis skyline behind him and the investors gathered in a loose, uncertain circle.

Ava held up the letter. The pages were rumpled now, but the letterhead was clear. HALVORSEN FAMILY TRUST. The itemized total was clear. $486,000. The signature was clear. Trent Mabry, four times.

"Read it," Ms. Chen said.

Ava read the key lines aloud. Final notice. Nonpayment. Lease termination. The company had failed to respond to three certified notices. The trust reserved all rights.

When she finished, no one spoke.

Mabry tried once more. "It's a dispute."

Ms. Chen looked at him. "Trent, is that your signature?"

He didn't answer.

"Is it?"

"It's my signature on the lease. That doesn't mean-"

"It means you knew," Ava said. "You signed the lease. You signed the notices. You let investors believe the rent was current."

Mabry's face went pale under the warm light. He looked at the term sheet folder in Ms. Chen's hand. He looked at the other investors, the ones who had been ready to sign before the champagne was poured. He looked at the letter, and for the first time, he looked like a man who understood the shape of the room.

Ms. Chen closed the folder all the way.

"We'll need to review this," she said. "The term sheet is on hold."

Mabry took a step toward her. "You can't do that. We're twenty minutes from closing."

"You're three months from paying your rent," she said. "And you lied about it."

The phrase moved through the room. Lied. Not forgot. Not delayed. Lied.

Mabry turned to Gus. "Who are you? Really?"

Gus stood beside Hector, hands loose, face steady. He did not answer. He had already given his name when he introduced himself at the elevator. Mabry had not heard it.

Hector spoke instead. "I'll tell you who he is."

Mabry's eyes widened. He looked at the master key in the panel, the frozen elevator, the old man in the plain navy jacket. The clues were all there. The cornerstone outside. The letterhead. The name on the lease. The name on the building. The name on the trust.

"Don't," Mabry said.

Hector did not listen.
