Chapter 7

Mabry saw the turn and panicked.

"Wait," he said. "Wait. Mr. Halvorsen. Let's talk."

Gus stopped. He did not turn around. "You had three months to talk. You had certified letters. You had a phone. You had a mailbox."

"This is business. These things get complicated."

"Rent isn't complicated."

Mabry lowered his voice, trying to make the room smaller. "Whatever the trust wants, we can settle. Privately. Tonight. Don't do this in front of investors."

Gus finally turned. His face was not cruel. It was tired. "You sent me to the freight elevator in the building my grandfather built."

Mabry's mouth opened. Nothing came out.

Ava stood beside the reception desk, the letter still in Mabry's hand, her portfolio open. She had done what she could. She had flagged the rent. She had given the board a deadline. She had opened an envelope because it was addressed to the tenant. Now she watched Mabry try to bargain with a man he had treated like a delivery route.

"I'll pay tomorrow," Mabry said. "The full amount. I'll wire it."

"The letter is the last notice," Gus said. "The trust voted on it."

"Then give me one month."

Gus did not answer. He looked at Hector. Hector's hand was still on his shoulder. The master key was still in the elevator panel, holding the doors frozen like a stopped clock.

Mabry tried another angle. He turned to Ava. "You. If you fix this, I'll make you a partner. You want that? You want the title?"

Ava looked at him. "I wanted the board to do its job."

"You'll never work in this city again."

"I'll sleep tonight."

The threat hung there, ugly and small. The investors heard it. Ms. Chen heard it. The waiter heard it. Everyone heard it.

Hector squeezed Gus's shoulder once. "Mr. Halvorsen, come with me."

Gus let himself be turned. Hector walked him back into the party, past the glass doors, past the champagne, past the frozen elevator. The investors parted. Not out of fear. Out of something older. Respect, maybe. Or the sudden awareness that they had been standing in a room owned by the man they had not noticed.

Mabry followed. "Hector, stop. I'm ordering you."

Hector did not stop.
