Chapter 5

Move Back Or Get Off The Plane

"This passenger is refusing crew instructions and blocking the aisle," Fiona said immediately, before I could open my mouth, before the captain had even finished the question.

"I have a confirmed ticket for 2A," I said. "The gate agent's own scanner confirmed it. She won't check it."

Captain Reyes looked at Malik. "Is that true?"

Malik hesitated exactly one second too long. "The scan came back clean, Captain. Seat 2A, her name."

Something flickered across Reyes's face, there and gone, the look of a man who has just been handed information he does not have time to use correctly. He glanced at his watch, then at Cordelia, comfortable and unbothered in the leather seat, then back at me.

"Ma'am, I appreciate that there may have been a ticketing error," he said, in the tone of someone reading from a script he'd used before. "But we're already behind schedule, and if you want to make this flight, you'll need to sit in the back with everyone else. Once we land, the airline has a complaint process."

"And if I don't?"

"Then I'll need you off my aircraft."

It was the same choice they'd all been building toward since the mimosa hit my folder. Swallow it, sit in the back, make my meeting. Or hold the line, on a schedule that didn't leave room for holding lines.

Cordelia didn't bother hiding her smile this time. "Finally. Someone with sense."

I looked at the folder in my hand, the orange stain gone hard and dark at the edges now, and I thought about every report I had ever filed where an airline's own crew treated a clear paper trail as an inconvenience to be managed rather than a fact to be honored. That was, in the end, exactly what my job existed to catch.

"I'm not taking a seat in the back, Captain," I said. "And I'm not getting off this plane."

"Then we have a problem," Reyes said, stepping half a pace closer, his voice dropping into something with more weight behind it. "That's a direct instruction from your captain. You're delaying my flight."

"I'm not delaying anything," I said. "I'm asking someone to look at a scanner that already told you the truth."

Reyes's patience visibly thinned. "Last chance. Move back, or walk off this aircraft right now."

I didn't move. Behind him, Fiona's hand had found her phone again, and this time, for just a second, she looked down at it.
