Chapter 1
"He stole that."
Priscilla Ashcroft pointed across the ballroom at the boy.
"Call security."
Eight-year-old Theo knelt beside her sister's wheelchair.
His loose sneaker lace lay across the polished marble.
Above him, chandeliers lit the Winterlight Gala.
Snow passed the Marlowe Hotel's tall lake-facing windows.
Inside, candlelight shone on silver and crystal.
A woman in emerald lowered her fork.
The man beside her pulled his chair away.
Theo tucked his torn sleeve over his cold hand.
"I only wanted to give it back," he said.
Vivienne Ashcroft leaned toward him.
"Give what back, sweetheart?"
His fingers found the cord at his open collar.
A tiny silver bird hung from it.
He held it away from his coat.
Across her lap rested her right hand.
One clasp on her silver bracelet stood empty.
Priscilla came quickly between the nearest tables.
Her black velvet skirt brushed a waiter's leg.
He moved aside without being asked.
She held a wine glass in her left hand.
Her right hand reached for Theo.
"Don't you touch her."
He drew his hand away from Vivienne's knee.
"I wasn't."
His open hand stayed between them.
Priscilla's fingers closed around his shoulder and coat collar.
Theo bent toward Vivienne, still trying to show her.
Then Priscilla pulled him backward.
The cord caught beneath her fingers.
It tightened across his collar, then snapped.
The bird dropped into Vivienne's lap.
Theo caught himself with one hand on the marble.
Priscilla let go.
He stayed on his knees, staring at the broken cord.
His lower lip trembled.
"That was my mama's."
He pressed his scraped palm against his coat.
A guest lifted her phone.
Priscilla turned toward the service doors.
"Ray, did you let him in?"
The server stepped away from the wall.
"He asked for Mrs. Ashcroft by name."
"Then you should've called me."
"He said he had something to return."
Priscilla raised her voice.
"Help him again, and I'll have you taken off this event."
Ray stopped, but he didn't go back through the doors.
His hands hung empty at his sides.
Two security officers appeared at the far entrance.
They started down the aisle between the tables.
Theo looked toward them, then back at Vivienne's lap.
"Please don't let them throw it away."
Vivienne put her hand over the bird.
"Nobody's throwing anything away."
She lifted it into her palm.
Her thumb passed over the engraved wing.
Then she brought it closer to her eyes.
The empty clasp slipped against her wrist.
"Addie?"
Priscilla's glass stopped halfway to her mouth.
"We don't say that name."
Vivienne looked past her, straight at the boy.
"Where did you get this?"
"My mama gave it to me."
"What was her name?"
"Addie."
Vivienne reached for the wheelchair's armrest with her free hand.
Her fingers tightened against the leather.
"Where is she?"
Theo rubbed his nose with his torn sleeve.
"She died in October," the boy said.
"Mama told me to bring the bird home."
Behind him, Priscilla's wine glass slipped and shattered on the marble.
